As a lifelong fan of sandwiches, I was thrilled to explore Northeastern’s campus and find its very own deli with fun, locally themed sandwiches. Each sandwich is perfectly crafted with the Northeastern aesthetic in mind, from the Phi Gamma Melta to The Fenway.
As a self-described sandwich connoisseur with high standards, I was skeptical about indulging in Wollaston’s immense and intimidating menu of both hot and cold subs, but I was pleasantly surprised when I ordered my first sandwich. I am here to spare you the fear I first faced when ordering a “Wolly’s” sandwich with a totally subjective list based on Northeastern students’ favorite subs.
Starting off strong, the most popular sandwiches seem to typically range between The Boston Connection and the Phi Gamma Melta/Alpha Delt Melt. This does not come as a shock to me as the first sub I tried at Wolly’s was The Boston Connection, which got me hooked. The balance between the roast beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato and Thousand Island Dressing is essentially always perfect. If you’re looking for a reliable cold sub to get you through the day, this is your best bet. It feels refreshing yet filling and is the perfect size for one hungry individual juggling the stresses of a busy schedule.
In this category, I am grouping together the Phi Gamma Melta and Alpha Delt Melt since their ingredients are identical besides the style of cooked chicken inside — bacon, mozzarella, chipotle mayo and banana peppers. The Alpha Delt Melt is my personal preference between the two hot subs, since I think the grilled chicken, as opposed to the Phi Gamma Melta breaded chicken tenders, work more harmoniously together and the sub is not as heavily bread-powered. The combination of all the ingredients makes for the perfect protein-packed hot sub — like a hug in sandwich form: comforting and exactly what you didn’t know you needed.
Continuing with more well-liked sandwiches, the Lighten Up Francis took me by surprise. The best way to describe it is like summer in a bite — bright, creamy avocado meets smoky grilled chicken and refreshing lettuce, tomato and cheese for pure, simple deliciousness. If you are into the lighter feel of a cold sub like I am, this sandwich would definitely be your best bet.
Another notable menu item that stood out to me amongst the others is The Ninja. My first reaction when unwrapping this hot sub was “wow, this is so petite.” But boy, does this little guy pack a punch. Though this is not Wolly’s most popular hot sandwich, it definitely deserves a spot on this list as the spicy chicken tenders are perfectly balanced out with the fresh avocado and tomato. If you are into simplicity and tradition, the Steak and Cheese is reliable and just what you would expect: thinly sliced hot steak and melted cheese.
Another notable sandwich perfect for the autumn season is The Gobbler. With turkey slices, stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayo, this sub is known for being a bit of a wild card, but, in my opinion, nothing quite beats the comfort of a Thanksgiving meal in the form of an affordable sub.
Overall, whether you want a quick bite, a full meal or a shareable, Wollaston’s is the spot for you. With their endless menu, easily customizable subs and reliably delicious options all for an affordable price, there is a sandwich for everybody. Take this list as a starter’s guide to the endless exploration for all of Wolly’s beautifully concocted sandwiches, because trust me, once you start trying their options, you cannot stop.
