At NUTV, there’s something new every week. NUTV is Northeastern’s on-campus, student-run source for news, sports, and entertainment. The three departments each have distinctive styles, content, and culture, and whether it’s fun-loving Sports, creative Entertainment, or fast-paced News, NUTV has got Huskies covered.

The Sports section of NUTV is always ready for action or activities, with regular meetings including food and games. Sports typically produces a few different types of content, including interviews, talk shows, and team coverage. A recent Sports piece was an interview with former athletic director Peter Roby, who retired after a 10-year career with Northeastern Athletics. They also have a recurring segment called Sportseastern, in which they discuss all things Husky sports.

Entertainment is the largest branch of NUTV, producing short and long films in all genres — from drama to comedy. Campus MovieFest, an event that NUTV sponsors every March, was a recent project in the Entertainment department. Participants worked hard to make short films, around five minutes long, in just a week.

News addresses the happenings at Northeastern, with segments like the weekly Husky Update. They recently implemented a news magazine series called Digging Deeper, utilizing “60 Minutes”-style journalism, in which they explore one central topic with interviews and research. NUTV News covers everything from on-campus events, to club profiles, to in-depth investigations.

Scott Adelberg, a third-year communication studies major, serves as a co-News Director for NUTV alongside his counterpart, second-year journalism major Kaitlyn Budion. Both Adelberg and Budion work to keep things running smoothly by teaching members how to use film equipment, helping brainstorm ideas for stories, and guiding members as they carry out those stories. Weekly meeting time is spent answering questions, brainstorming, and giving feedback on completed stories.

“As a News Director, my big project is always thinking about the bigger picture … I [want] to bring more frequent journalism to the club and make it a place where members [can] learn real world skills and come away with a reel as well as production knowledge,” said Adelberg.

Another thing Adelberg likes to see NUTV members do is “push bounds.” Adelberg recently worked on an investigation of Husky Card security on campus. “I gave my Husky Card to another reporter and we filmed as she bought things with it and got into my building to show what could happen if someone stole your Husky Card.”

He has also recently worked on a Digging Deeper episode that led him to interview a Boston City Hall worker.

“When looking at food waste, I ended up finding a composting program that the City of Boston runs, and we actually ended up going to City Hall to interview someone on the Mayor’s team,” he said.

Adelberg enjoys Digging Deeper because when investigating, “you really get to learn a lot about a topic and find things that you never expected to find.”

NUTV News recently worked together with Woof Magazine to cover this year’s Relay for Life event. This was the first collaboration of many for NUTV News; they hope to make club collaborations a regular occurrence in the future.

NUTV holds a number of events each semester for both members and non-members, Campus MovieFest being a major non-member one. Other member events include activities like movie nights and ice skating, guest speakers, broadcast journalism workshops, and “The Schefens”, an awards show of sorts for the club that recognizes the best stories of each semester.

From West Village to Ell Hall, NUTV works to keep Huskies informed and entertained, whether they are reporting on the latest hockey game, a fun on-campus event, the newest club, or creating the next Schefen-winning film.
