New year, new wardrobe.

While Y2K, quiet luxury and blokette trends reigned true in 2023, 2024’s trends are shaping up to display an even wider variety of the fashion palate.

One trend that will stay forever strong? Second-hand fashion! Although it may seem tempting to run to Newbury Street or your laptop to mass-buy a whole new wardrobe, that’s completely unnecessary! Trends are meant for fashion-lovers to pick and choose which to participate in, with only a select few being able to advance one’s style. Fashion is also extremely cyclical — meaning that finding the current season’s trends at thrift stores or on Depop is not a difficult feat.

So here’s to (sustainably) raising the fashion bar for this winter and beyond! Below are the top four trends you can expect to see on your social feeds, in-stores and on-campus.

Girlhood

2023 saw the rise and complete takeover of girlhood — from girl dinners to girl math and, of course, bows on anything and everything you could possibly imagine (thank Sandy Liang for that!) Feminine touches like rosettes, ruffles and ribbons were littered all over the runway. If 2024 is anything, you can call it for what it is: the year of the girl!

Corporate Chic

As seen on Bella Hadid or Giselle Bündchen in the iconic “The Devil Wears Prada,” corporate chic is full of perfectly fitted pleated trousers, tiny prescription glasses and shades of muted gray, making it perfect for the fashion-conscious co-op or Northeastern student trying to break into the professional world.

Leopard Print

Clawing its way back into our cultural consciousness as one of 2024’s top trends as the cycle shifts from the early 2000s to the 2010s, leopard print has already made a splash. The loudness of the pattern and previously “tacky” reputation can make the trend seem daunting to adopt, but rest assured that if styled correctly, leopard print can easily become a new neutral in your wardrobe.

Eclectic Grandpa

Composed of pieces like baseball hats, loafers, garish knits, wristwatches and anything retro or vintage-inspired, the “eclectic grandpa” trend is the perfect antithesis to the never-ending trend cycle that we’ve found ourselves trapped in. Although this style can technically be achieved by picking up a few of the essential pieces, this trend has spurred a whole new conversation on personal style. Since the look is meant to be reminiscent of an actual grandfather, it’s crucial that the pieces of the fit are well-loved pieces accumulated over time — not exactly achieved with a trip to Urban Outfitters.
