There are several things that I wish I knew before coming to Northeastern that would have made my transition to university life much smoother and less stressful. As an international student, having access to some common information before selecting a campus would have been immensely helpful. There were a lot of things I got to know later on that would’ve made my life much easier. Here are some key things that I believe would be helpful for anyone starting at Northeastern:

  1. Co-op is a game-changer: Northeastern University is known for its co-op program, which allows students to gain real-world experience and make professional connections through six-month-long work experiences. It is important to take advantage of this program and start looking for co-op opportunities early. Plan ahead and work with Northeastern’s co-op office to find the best fit for you. You will get assigned a co-op advisor who is there with you through job search, interview prep and during your co-op.They will guide you in every step of the way until you are done with your co-op. You also get to attend a co-op prep class that teaches you everything you need to know while on co-op. It’s great for international students as you get to learn about the workplace culture and the do’s and don’ts while in a workplace environment.
  2. The campus is big: Northeastern’s campus is spread out over several blocks, which can be overwhelming for new students. The Boston campus is cut in half by a green line T station, which can get confusing. It is important to familiarize yourself with the campus and use resources like the campus map to get around. Also, be prepared to do a lot of walking.
  3. Time management is key: Northeastern has a rigorous academic program that requires strong time management skills. It is important to prioritize your time and stay organized to succeed academically. Use a planner or a time management app, such as … to keep track of assignments and deadlines.
  4. Take advantage of resources: Northeastern offers a wide range of free resources for students including academic advising, counseling, career services and more. It is important to take advantage of these resources and seek help when needed. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance from professors or staff members.
  5. Networking is important: Expanding your professional network is a critical component to achieving career success and Northeastern provides ample opportunities to do just that. While Northeastern’s alumni network is impressive, it’s important to recognize that networking extends far beyond this group. Building relationships with professors, classmates and co-op colleagues can be just as valuable for your career prospects. Make a point to attend networking events, ask questions and actively engage with those around you. You never know where your next job lead, mentorship or professional connection might come from. With Northeastern’s resources and your own initiative, building a robust professional network is well within reach.
  6. Boston is a great city: Northeastern is located in the heart of Boston, which is a vibrant and historic city. There are many cultural attractions, restaurants and entertainment options to explore. Take advantage of the city while you’re here and explore all it has to offer.

Northeastern University is an amazing institution with endless opportunities for growth and development. By taking advantage of resources, managing your time and networking, you can make the most of your time here. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or explore the city. Good luck with your studies and enjoy your time at Northeastern!
